I was sucked in from the very first page, and couldn't put the book down!

Ms. Klassen is a great storyteller. All of the characters were well-rounded (I really got a feel for each of their 'personalities'), and the plot was very detailed.

The main character, Charlotte Lamb, is a brave soul who makes some poor choices in the beginning, but then redeems herself by making some very wise, but difficult, choices later on.

Themes of the book include sacrifice, reunion, selflessness, choices, redemption, and finding oneself.

I loved how the author keeps you guessing, right up until the end, about how the story will play out. And, I was grateful to not find any spelling or grammatical errors throughout the entire book (as is so common in books, lately).

I look forward to reading more by this author. She did a great job with this first novel. =)

"Edgy Christian fiction" at its best ~ HIGHLY recommended!

Rated: A+

REVIEW: Revealed by Tamera Alexander

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_FMssPe8sRsU/R0teaSZeezI/AAAAAAAAAKk/hgFfnoIQs1I/s200/Revealed.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5137303605654485810" />
REVEALED (Fountain Creek Chronicles, book 2) by Tamera Alexander

Annabelle Grayson has had her slate wiped clean, and she's been given a chance to start over. But, when her new husband dies, Annabelle has to continue with their plans without him.

Matthew Taylor has had a difficult life, partly of his own making. As such, he's made some poor choices, and is now constantly looking over his shoulder. But, when he's forced to partner with Annabelle, his life starts to take a different turn.

I enjoyed reading this second installment in Ms. Alexander's Fountain Creek Chronicles. Many subjects are touched on, such as choices, forgiveness, reconciliation, Alzheimer's Disease, and more.

Though a bit predictable at times, I still enjoyed seeing the story play out, and there were enough twists to make the book quite enjoyable.

I look forward to reading book three of the series, "Remembered".

Rated: B+

REVIEW: The Alexander Cipher by Will Adams

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_FMssPe8sRsU/RyPeuy7bGPI/AAAAAAAAAKE/YSE6OZpz0OU/s200/Alexander+Cipher.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5126185696404117746" />
The Alexander Cipher by Will Adams

Underwater archaeologist, Daniel Knox, has upset the wrong people and is now on the run throughout Egypt. Forever afterward, Ursula's life is changed... as is Nik's!

The only "issue" I had with this book was the author's constant peppering of brand names of the rich-and-famous... stuff I haven't a clue about, and couldn't possibly relate to! (clothing, shoes, furniture, etc). I just couldn't "picture" most of it.

Otherwise, I really liked Ms. Bottke's ability to draw you into the story, constantly making you wonder what's going to happen next, and leaving you wanting to know more.

I think that the character's lives were portrayed fairly realistically, and the descriptions of the music were so moving that I was almost in tears! I also loved that the family-life portrayed by the author was what everyone --I'm sure-- dreams of having, so that is a big pull.

Overall, a very good book that I didn't want to see end. Highly recommended!

Rated: A

REVIEW: A Woman's Place

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_FMssPe8sRsU/RqddsHmvYMI/AAAAAAAAAHs/mtqsxXhWNv0/s200/Womans+Place.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5091140916302799042" />
A Woman's Place by Lynn Austin

When I first picked up this book, I didn't expect to like it because it's set during war times, and I don't usually care for those stories.

But, Ms. Austin has a way of writing that draws you deeper & deeper into the story and doesn't let you go until the end! So I found myself devouring this book, not wanting to put it down!

Ginny, Rosa, Helen, and Jean all lead normal lives until the start of World War II. Then each of the women feel compelled to do their part for the war by signing up to work as electricians at Stockton Shipyard. Over time, working together brings the four women closer as they share their joys & sorrows.

Ms. Austin used each chapter to focus on one of the four women, telling the story from each one's perspective.

The only problem I had with the book was that some parts of the story seemed unrealistic or rushed (ex. relationships healed/ended too quickly; arguements being, or not being, resolved realistically; etc).

But, I really enjoyed how Ms. Austin weaved Christian truths all throughout the book. And, I found that there were things about each of the four women that I could really relate to ~ things that reminded me of my own life.

Overall, it was a very enjoyable read that I will be happy to recommend to others.

Rated: B+

REVIEW: The Backward Life by Jarrod Jones

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_FMssPe8sRsU/RqJhnnmvYLI/AAAAAAAAAHk/eS9sRnZHBWA/s200/BackwardLife.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5089737862156345522" /> The Backward Life: In Pursuit of an Uncommon Faith by Jarrod Jones

When I first read the review of this book on the FaithfulReader.com website, I was intrigued. I had to read this book! So, I checked my local library -- but they didn't have a copy. I asked if they'd order one, and (thank the Lord!) they agreed to do so!

After waiting patiently, the book finally arrived, and I brought it home. I started reading right away... and then found that I couldn't put it down! Right from the very beginning, you are drawn into the stories Jarrod shares from his own life. He then uses those stories to enlighten truths from God's word. In so doing, Jarrod shows you how you can live a life that is "backward" to the world's way of doing things... because we serve a "backward" God.

The back of the book says, "Discover how much fuller your life can be when you revel in living as Jesus taught: giving to gain, losing to win, and turning first and last around."

I especially liked the chapter called "Gloriously Ruined". In it, Jarrod shares a passage from Joni Eareckson Tada's book, "When God Weeps", describing Jesus' crucifixion in a new light. And, let me tell you... I have never been so moved by that story! It really did give me a new perspective!

And, it's the same with so much of this book ... I have come to view a lot of things in a new light, thanks to Mr. Jones!

Some of the other chapter titles are:

Me, Me, Me

Will the Real God Please Stand Up?

God Gone Public

Backward Loving

The Backward Mind

I can't recommend this book highly enough ... especially if you feel like you're stuck in a spiritual "rut". It is written in a down-to-earth, friend-to-friend style, with lots of humor thrown in for good measure. But, the truth is powerfully written... you can't help but be changed! ;o)

REVIEW: The Daring Female's Guide to Ecstatic Living

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_FMssPe8sRsU/RjLJ9GQ3dKI/AAAAAAAAAGE/ktTmgc8dPIs/s200/Daring+Female2.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5058327382981047458" />
"The Daring Female's Guide to Ecstatic Living: 30 Dares for a More Gutsy and Fulfilling Life" by Natasha Kogan

I found this book while browsing in my local library, the other evening... hadn't ever heard of it, or the author. I hesitantly brought it home, fearing it would be "too much" for me.

Well, I couldn't put it down! There are 30 ideas for "Dares"... ways you can make your life more "gutsy and fulfilling". ;o)

Each "dare" is only a couple of pages long, and there are spots after each for you to journal your own ideas.

Mixed in with each of the dares, you learn about Ms. Kogan's personal story of how she "dared" to start her own publishing company with her husband. This adds to the "inspiration". ;o)

Some of the Dares I liked best were:

dare to be the kind of person you dream of being

dare to love your quirks and imperfections

dare to NOT label yourself!

dare to take life detours

dare to UN-intimidate yourself

A Daring Female...

- does awesome, risky, outrageous, gutsy, unique, and creative things

- worries little about others' perceptions

- always stays true to her guts and instincts

- knows what she wants and has the guts to try and make it happen

Quote from page 163:

"There's no way of knowing where you'll end up every time you take on a new challenge or pursue a new opportunity. And that's the absolutely great thing about living a Daring Female life! It allows you to be surprised, to experience success as well as failure, and to learn something from each situation that guides your future choices and brings you closer to filling your life with things you care about and want to be doing."

I loved this book (obviously), and I highly recommend it to anyone who needs a dose of "kick-in-the-butt" inspiration. ;o)

REVIEW: Hidden in Plain Sight

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_FMssPe8sRsU/RifQglIq0zI/AAAAAAAAAF0/C3cq6of4P2Y/s200/HIddenInPlainSight.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5055238364889535282" /> HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT: The Secret of More
by Mark Buchanan

Built on the Bible verse 2 Peter 1:1-9, Buchanan outlines the seven virtues listed by the apostle Peter, and then goes into depth explaining how they unlock the "secret of more" in our lives if we learn to have these qualities "in increasing measure".

"For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. After a time, Nulani's presence starts to heal Theo, and their friendship blossoms into something more.

But the civil war in Sri Lanka steps in and interferes. And, the reader is drawn further into the story, wondering how Nulani and Theo's newfound relationship could possibly survive.

I am absolutely amazed that this is the author's first book! It is beautifully written with flowing prose and vivid description. From the first pages, I was drawn into the story, feeling the humidity, hearing the buzz of the mosquitos and the lap of the waves on the seashore, and seeing the jungle foliage. Ms. Tearne has made Sri Lanka and its people come to life on the pages.

I found it incredibly hard to put this book down, so immersed was I in the story. I will most likely reread it in the future, as its depth is sure to have kept certain things hidden until a later time.

I look forward to reading more by this author!

Rated: B+

REVIEW: THE HEIR

THE HEIR by Paul Robertson

When billionaire Melvin Boyer dies in a car crash, his son Jason inherits his fortune. His wife is thrilled, but all Jason can think is "I don't want this".

As Jason struggles to decide what to do, more people connected with the Boyer family are dying -- are the deaths really just "accidents", or is someone sending Jason a message?

This book was an excellent, quick-paced read. The only qualms I had with it were that the characters' dialogue seemed a bit curt / choppy, and the ending seemed to be tied up a little too neatly. Otherwise, though, it was a great mystery... Her passion for God just lights up the pages, and I found myself longing to read without stopping.

I loved that Beth's writing made it seem as if she were right in the room with me, having a girl-to-girl chat. But, she didn't mince words, either. She told it just like it is, without pussy-footing around issues.

As a result, I feel that I can see "light at the end of the tunnel" (or, should I say, at the top of my pit?!) I am closer to deliverance, praise God!

Throughout the book, Beth stresses that, it doesn't matter whether you were thrown in the pit, slipped into it, or just plain jumped in ... you can be delivered! God wants us all to be free ... "You shall know the Truth, and the Truth shall set you free!" I laughed, and I cried, and I did "the hanky wave"!

Ms. Barnhill's humor is comparable to that of Christian comedian Chonda Pierce -- at times just side-splitting funny! But, her life-stories and insights make you nod your head in agreement, or sigh with longing.

I especially liked --and could relate to-- the chapter called "Stomach Girl". Her "horror stories" of visits to the "crypt" will make you cringe in rememberance. ;o)

Amidst all of her humorous tales, Ms. Barnhill makes it abundantly clear that God loves us JUST AS WE ARE, and desires for us to accept His lavish grace. All we have to do is "let go".

I highly recommend this book!

Rated: B+

REVIEW: INTUITIVE EATING

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_FMssPe8sRsU/Ra1PuruHdpI/AAAAAAAAABA/-vbzd-oIDrs/s320/IntuitiveEating.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5020756823016699538" />
Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works by Evelyn Tribole & Elyse Resch

This book details the steps you need to take to become an "intuitive eater" -- a person who follows their body's natural cues of "hunger" and "satiety" in order to eat in moderation and shrink down to their natural body weight.

I especially liked the chapters called: "Challenge the Food Police" / "Make Peace With Food" / & "Respect Your Body". Challenging the "Food Police" means undoing the "diet mentality" that's been so ingrained in us by society, and substituting positive statements every time you hear a negative one regarding food or your eating (in your head).

Making peace with food reminds us that NO food is "good" or "bad" or "forbidden", and we need to give ourselves "unconditional permission to eat" the foods that we love and that satisfy us.

Respecting our bodies means not having negative things to say about yourself when you look in the mirror, and it means buying clothes NOW (not later when you've lost X number of pounds, first) that make you look and FEEL great!

This is an awesome book that I recommend to many people! :o)

REVIEW: THE BRETHREN

The Brethren (Annie's People #3) by Beverly Lewis

** Please Note: This review was written by my friend, Doris S.**

What woman doesn't want to have it all? Annie Zook, the Amish preacher's daughter sure does. Truth be told, everything she did now was either with her art or Ben in mind, and Annie could hardly wait to have both. No need to choose one over the other as she had with her former beau, Rudy.
"I can have it all." (Annie - p.306)

I found it tough to get into the book and looked for a way to start it more quickly and with more action. What I found was that, had chapters 1 and 2 been reversed, this may have been accomplished. Also, Zeke's character change/conversion was too profound and quick. His total reversal of thought patterns, behaviour, and treatment of his wife could have started earlier in the process.

Nevertheless, I liked that the book deals with issues relevant to today's reader, plain or fancy, and that Scriptures are woven into the text seamlessly. Also, how Beverly Lewis avoids "preaching" by recounting the thoughts, experiences, joys, grief, and decision making processes of the characters. She continues to explore and illuminate the ways and beliefs of the Amish in a respectful way.

REVIEW: THE HEART OF CHRISTIANITY

The Heart of Christianity by Marcus J. Borg

I almost put this book down after only 32 pages. Borg tries to get you to deconstruct & redo your thinking about major foundations of the Christian faith. But, to suggest changing your thoughts about key points like God and the Bible is just pushing it too far, in my opinion.

I originally picked up this book because I'd heard that Borg was deeply entrenched in the "emerging church" conversation, and I had to see for myself. Now I'm convinced.

There were a few good points/truths that I took from the book, so it wasn't a complete waste of my time. And, it was humorous, too, so not too heavy.

I loved that a lot of chapter titles & subtitles were names of books or movies that've been sometimes slightly tweaked: "Goodnight, Moon", "Where the Wild Things Are", "The Hitchiker's Guide to Atheism", "Clash of the Titans", etc.

The author talks of 6 commonly held worldviews:
- the Haunted Worldview
- Dueling Yodas
- Omnipresent Supergalactic Oneness
- WYSIWYG
- Designer Religion
- Biblical Worldview

...and outlines each one. He shows how they can be similar to, and how they differ from, the Biblical worldview.

Written for the college-age crowd, this book is easy-to-understand, and would make a great study/discussion tool for Youth groups or Sunday School classes! God's gift of grace is for everyone, and all we have to do is show up and accept it. We don't have to be perfect, or have it all together.

Manning also talks about how we need to be honest with ourselves, with others, and with God. We can admit that we're "ragamuffins", that we may be saved, but we still struggle with the same old issues (lust, pride, anger, etc). We're "sinners saved by grace".

It was interesting to see that Brennan's thoughts often line up with those of the "emerging church", but most of it is put in a way that makes it not seem so bad.

Chapter 9 talked of a "second call", and to me, this seemed a bit "New Age"... I'm no expert in that, but he just seemed to lose me for a bit in that chapter. It felt a little "off".

Otherwise, though, this was a great book, and I took lots of notes!

Rated: B

REVIEW: EVERYTHING'S COMING UP JOSEY

Everything's Coming Up Josey (Steeple Hill Cafe) by Susan May Warren

Josey Berglund knows she needs a change -- big time! So, her friend, H's, suggestion that she "do something" with her life, coupled with a guest-preacher's call to service, has Josey packing her bags for ... Russia!

The people Josey meets in Moscow are quite the interesting bunch: Caleb, the grunge-boy; Auntie Milla & Vovka - her neighbors; and her roomate, Tracey, who's got plenty of boy-troubles of her own.

Between teaching ESL for Moscow Bible Church, dealing with her roomate, and trying to figure out why her love-life has gone so horribly wrong, Josey questions God about His plans for her life. Through it all, Josey realizes that she won't get far in life trying to keep the reins ... she has to "let go & let God" before her ride will smooth itself out.

I loved this book -- could hardly put it down! Josey is a very loveable character, with very real struggles. Auntie Milla is hilarious ... Vovka is persistent. Casey desires a closer walk with the Lord and realizes she won't find it there.

While browsing in the Christian bookstore, Casey meets Lydia Steele. Over coffee, Lydia describes her church, "The Gathering Place" and its members that call themselves "the Body". Casey's hopes rise as she wonders if God is leading her to seek Him through the Bodylife. The more entrenched Casey becomes in the Body, though, the more she realizes it isn't God calling her there at all!

Much of the book contains unbelievable situations, such as Casey's immediate trust in Lydia and the Bodylife members' financial support despite lack of employment. Yet readers will still relate to Casey's desire to walk closer with God. Those who have experienced spiritual abuse may find strength in reading of how Casey struggles to get free. It's a memoir of how Dr. Carson grew up in a poor, African American neighborhood, and yet, because of his mother's love and influence, he went on to become head of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University Hospital. It's an amazingly inspiring book! I read it first as a teen, and then again a year or two ago, and I HIGHLY recommend it. He works for endless hours, and his wife suffers the consequences.
Anna Spafford is a woman with a quiet spirit. She often takes life as it is given to her, bowing to others' wishes, even if her needs and wants go unmet in the process.
And, God has a way of reaching these people, even through the shells they've built around themselves.
I was not completely taken with this book. I found it very frustrating that the author more often "told" rather than "showed", and this same frustration is the reason, I believe, why I didn't connect with the characters, or come to care for them. I felt very removed from this story.
Despite these flaws, the messages sprinkled throughout this book are quite powerful: strength and peace despite suffering, forgiveness when it's hardest, living a life of servitude, and leading others to Christ by example rather than preaching.
Not a wonderful book, but not a bad book, either.

Rated: C (average)

REVIEW: GONE WITH THE WIND

Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell

Wow, what a powerful book! I think that this book was/is sooo popular because so many people could probably relate to it in some way or other. I found myself really relating to Scarlett in a lot of ways (I don't want to say in the *bad* ways, but I think we all have a little of that in us, no?). Anyhoo. It was oftentimes a very depressing book, and it's left me with a really melancholy feeling on putting it down -- partly because it wasn't a "happy ending" (and I'm a sucker for those), and partly because I'm sorry to see the book go. I was really enjoying it, despite its length! (This is the longest book I've ever read! Yay!)
I hated the descriptions of the war, as that is sooo not my cup of tea. I hate conflict in any way, shape or form. And, I cringed at the treatment of the African-American peoples... the slavery, the derrogatory terms, etc.
But, I loved all the rest -- Scarlett's determination and bullheadedness, and Melanie's forgiving, sweet spirit, and Ashley's honor, and Rhett's savage but loving personality.
I'll probably reread this book some day! :o)

As for now, I'm going to be getting the movie from the library and watching that to see how closely my imagination and the movie fit. ;o)

Excellent book! Three generations of women, all who held onto their stories, and all who tried running from their problems.
The history speckled throughout the womens' stories (ranging from the 1920s to the present day) shows that Ms. Austin did her homework in researching for this book.
The characters are written in such detail that you come to love and care for them -- I even cried when one passed away!
And the relationship issues dealt with in the book are very realistic. I'm really looking forward to reading the sequel, INKSPELL, but I'll be waiting a while so as not to spoil it by getting burnt out. :o?

Highly recommended!

REVIEW: BEETHOVEN: The Universal Composer

Beethoven by Edmund Morris

Much as I had looked forward to reading BEETHOVEN: THE UNIVERSAL COMPOSER, I found it a little heavier than what I’m used to. There were parts that I loved – like the author’s beautiful, flowing descriptions of Beethoven’s works. Mr. Morris really seems to have a passion for music! I could almost hear the songs as he described them!

And, I found it interesting to see how difficult it must be to write such complicated music! I’ve dabbled in composition, myself, but nothing so extravagant, and I’ve never known the degree of effort that must go into something like the works of Beethoven.

Otherwise, though, I had a hard time continuing with this book. I often found myself wishing I knew more about the musical terms the author referred to – what they meant, what they sounded like, etc.

I would recommend this book to anyone who has studied music, but not to the casual reader who’s just looking for a good book.

Rated: C (average)

REVIEW: THE PREACHER'S DAUGHTER

The Preacher's Daughter by Beverly Lewis

THE PREACHER'S DAUGHTER was a slow-moving, but engaging tale about Annie Zook, a young Amish woman coming of age, and her English friend, Louisa.
The pace of the novel, I think, was deliberate -- the Amish live a life that is much slowed down from the life we live. With our Emails and other forms of quick communication, it's hard to imagine life without all of our "conveniences!" She loved science and exploration, and -- because of her unconventional ways -- she met many influential people (she even had a thing for Peter Mark Roget, the creator of "Roget's Thesaurus"!)

I loved Lady Jane for following her dreams even when doing so wasn't socially acceptable. But I despised her for feeling superior to so many around her. She was a woman who did as she pleased, and often persuaded others to do as she pleased, too!

This well-written, engaging tale makes you feel as if you've travelled back in time. It may be a biography, but it's written like a novel, and as such, it was truly a great read. For one thing, I love a good love-story, especially when there is a lot of tension. ;-P Second, I ADORE novels that deal with anything regarding England!

Lady Constance Caroline Morrow sneaks aboard a prison ship bound for America to say goodbye to her Uncle Skelly. She is discovered by the captain, kidnapped by him, and then taken to America. She is then purchased from the ship full of "tobacco brides" by Drew O'Connor.
Though Drew isn't looking for a wife, the colony's governor gets word that the Lady is living with Drew, and he forces the two to marry anyway. Drew must then deal with the fact that Lady Constance is a "rare breed" -- she is trained in the maths and sciences, loves solving puzzles, and doesn't know how to cook or garden!
Over time, the two come to appreciate one another better, and they realize that life really isn't up to them ... I was cautious, though, as a lot of books out there have been written to back up Mr. Brown's claims.
Earlier this year, I read Bart D. Ehrman's other book, "Lost Christianities". I knew, from reading that book, that this author is a Historian and a Christian. So, upon finding this book, I was thrilled, as I knew I could trust this author to give me the *real* facts!
And, I wasn't disappointed.
A lot of this book is a repetition of what Mr. Ehrman had written in "Lost Christianities", but it is still very good. He debunks Mr. Brown's false claims and gives you the history to back up what he's saying.
Highly recommended.

REVIEW: A SCANDALOUS FREEDOM: The Radical Nature of the Gospel

A Scandalous Freedom by Steve Brown

When I read the review of this book at FaithfulReader.com, I knew I was going to have to read it. I asked my library to order a copy, thinking they wouldn't, but they did! I was thrilled. Mr. Brown writes humorously and in a down-to-earth style. This book was excellent! Most Christians are "so bound...and they can't tell anybody." Christians often fear "stepping out of the box" and going against what's "acceptable" for the greater fear of rejection. Mr. Brown encourages us to take risks, "upset people!", and tell others that we're not perfect...but God loves us anyway! :) An empowering book that's definitely on my wish list to be owned someday!

REVIEW: LOST CHRISTIANITIES: The Battle for Scripture and the Faiths We Never Knew

Lost Christianities by Bart D. The moves are easy and uncomplicated, and they won't do damage to already tender joints and muscles. No more excuses! She encourages you to modify the program to what you need. The book is filled with success stories, and explains how, through using this program, a lot of people have found a way to manage their diabetes, or reduce their risk of heart disease, etc.

Since reading this book, I have bought the videos, and have been "walking away the pounds!" I have tried other programs like Tae Bo, and Latin Dance, and they were all so complicated that I easily gave up. Leslie's program is simple, and fun! I enjoy popping in the tapes and walking with these new "friends"!

Purpose!

I've made up my mind!
